Yzerman Steps Down as Lightning GM

Legendary player-turned-executive Steve Yzerman is stepping down from his position as Tampa Bay Lightning general manager.

Hired in 2010, Steve Yzerman oversaw the resurgence of the Lightning, signing Martin St. Louis and Simone Gagné in his first off-season. The Lightning went from missing the playoffs to the Eastern Conference Final in his first season, netting Yzerman a GM of the Year nomination in 2011 and winning the award in 2015.

During Yzerman’s tenure, the Lightning made it to 4 Conference Finals and the 2014-2015 Stanley Cup Final, setting franchise records for both wins and points in 2014-15 and 2017-18, and have assembled a team full of all stars and top-6 players all over the ice.

Julien BriseBois is set to take over as GM, and Yzerman’s future remains uncertain. He told players he was “going home to Detroit,” with many speculating he is putting himself in line to take over as Red Wings GM, a job Yzerman has reportedly wanted since he joined Detroit’s front office in 2007.

Whatever comes next for Steve Yzerman, he has already amassed one of the most storied careers in NHL history.
