Winners and Losers of Round One in NHL Draft

With the completion of the First Round of the 2018 NHL Draft, let’s take look at the winners and losers of this event.

Winner: Swedish Hockey

For the first time since 1989 a Swedish born player was drafted first overall with Rasmus Dahlin being selected by the Buffalo Sabres.

On top of that six Swedish players were selected in the just the First Round; that matches years of 1993, 2009, and 2011.

Loser: Ottawa Senators/ Erik Karlsson

Forfeiting their First Round pick in the 2019 Draft to complete the Matt Duchene trade, and with Mike Hoffman now out of Ottawa, the Senators appear to be trying to hold onto their Captain and face of the franchise Erik Karlsson.

Karlsson has wanted out of Ottawa since the dysfunctional front office completely folded after a trip to the Conference Finals in 2017.

Some potential trade destinations for Karlsson are Tampa Bay, Vegas, and Colorado; but who would not want Erik Karlsson on their roster?

Winner: New York Islanders

Honestly, I love seeing what Lou Lamoriello is doing the Islanders organization thus far.

With back to back picks in the First Round, the Islanders picked Oliver Wahlstrom and Noah Dobson.

Wahlstrom has an incredible shot as a Winger, and Dobson shows amazing potential as a young Defenseman.

I can not wait to see what this Islanders team can do, especially if Tavares can get a deal done.

Loser: New York Rangers

The New York Rangers had a total of three First Round Picks in this years’s draft, however, in my opinion not much was accomplished with this luxury.

Passing on both Wahlstrom, and Dobson, the Rangers selected Vitali Kravtsov.

Kravtsov is a talented winger, but many analyists were expecting him to be drafted later in the draft than ninth overall.

General Manager Gorton then drafted two Defenseman with the Rangers last two picks in the First Round.

If I were a Rangers fan I would be disappointed in how these THREE First Round Picks were used.
