Will Ovechkin’s Game Seven Struggles Continue Tonight?

Alexander Ovechkin is arguably the best goal scorer the NHL has ever seen and is the only modern day player people have considered to be able to come close if not touch Wayne Gretzky’s goal record of 894 goals.

Ovechkin has recorded 658 goals, and 553 assists, for 1,211 points in 1,084 games played (1.12 points per game).

Since coming to the league in 2006, Alexander Ovechkin has made the playoffs eleven times, and has played in eleven Game 7’s.

In the Playoffs Ovechkin has played in 127 games and has recorded 125 points (.98 points per game).

Being apart of three Presidents’ Trophy winning teams from 2010 to now, many would expect the Capitals to have more than just one Stanley Cup; however Oveckin has displayed some inability to close out games, and produce in these series deciding games.

Of the eleven Game 7’s Ovechkin has played in, the Capitals have only won four; losing to the Rangers three times, the Penguins twice, the Flyers once, and the Canadiens once.

In these games Alexander Ovechkin has recorded four goals, and three assists for seven points; much less than his over a point per game career average (.64 points per game).

Even more alarming is the fact that in five of these games Ovechkin did not even register a point, and in eight of these games he either had a negative, or even plus-minus.

Here are the three worst Game 7’s Ovechkin had in my opinion:

2010 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals v.s. Montreal

The Capitals were the Presidents’ Trophy winners taking on the eighth seeded Canadiens in the First Round.

After being down 3-1 in the series to the Capitals, the Canadiens came back to force a Game 7, which they would ultimately win 2-1 and saw Ovechkin record just an assist, and an even plus-minus after leading the team in ice time with 23:35 of ice time.

2013 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals v.s. New York Rangers

After leading the series 2-0, the Rangers won two games to tie it 2-2 before the Capitals would win Game 5 making it 3-2; however the sixth seeded Rangers would force a Game 7 against the third seeded Capitals in Washington.

This game was all New York.

The Rangers would walk away with this game 5-0, leaving Ovechkin pointless, and an even plus-minus once again.

2017 Eastern Conference Semifinals v.s. Pittsburgh

After beating Toronto 4-2 in the First Round, the Presidents’ Trophy winning Capitals would take on their rival Pittsburgh Penguins in another Second Round match up.

Washington winning the Metropolitan Division had home ice, and would end up falling to the Penguins once again 2-0.

This was another time we saw Ovechkin held pointless in a Game 7, and even worse he was out for both goals against giving him a -2 plus-minus.

Even of the four Game 7’s the Capitals have won, Ovechkin has recorded just one goal, and one assist, with a combined plus-minus of +2.

Coming off a Stanley Cup championship the Capitals have looked solid in the First Round against the Hurricanes, although Carolina’s ability to tie the series 2-2, and then force a Game 7 as well looks a little too familiar.

So far in this playoffs the Great Eight has four goals, and four assists in six games.

Puck drop for Game 7 tonight is at 7:30 PM ET in Washington as the Hurricanes look to spoil the Capitals title defense, and the Capitals look to advance to the Second Round against the New York Islanders.
