Where is Vegas Heading?

On January 15th, the Vegas Golden Knights fired their Head Coach Gerard Gallant after a 24-19-8 start to their season.

Who would be chosen to fill that spot?

Former San Jose Sharks’ Head Coach Peter DeBoer, who was fired by San Jose in December.

Since taking over, DeBoer has coached two games as Vegas’ Head Coach, defeating Ottawa 4-2 handily, and losing to Montreal in a shootout 5-4 after trailing 3-0 early in the game.

As it stands, Vegas currently is 25-19-7, and sit fourth in the Pacific Division, along with the first wildcard spot in the Western Conference; however this can be deceiving as Vegas is just one point behind Vancouver for first place in the Pacific Division.

So where does Vegas need to improve in order to remain a Western Conference power house?

The Golden Knights have six Forwards with at least 25 points on the season, so their offense is producing although on defense only two Defensmen, Theodore, and Schmidt, have more than 10 points on the season.

The one area this team needs to improve on is defense.

With the ninth best offense with 159 goals scored on the season, and the eighth power play, Vegas has struggled on the penalty kill, and goals against sitting 23rd, and 22nd in the league respectively.

In net Fleury has been slightly sub-par with a goals against average of 2.85, and save percentage of .906, along with back-up Malcolm Subban recording a poor .898 save percentage, and 3.04 goals against average.

If DeBoer, and Vegas want to remain a contender in the West, they need to acquire a solid Defenseman by the trade deadline, and improve their play defensively.

To their benefit the Pacific Division is by far the weakest division in the NHL with Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Vegas, and Arizona within 1 point of each other at just 57, and 58 respectively.

Vegas will take on the Boston Bruins tonight at 7:00 ET as they look to head to the All-Star Break on a high note.
