Under the Rader: NBA Free Agents Left that Aren’t Getting Buzz

Though there are major free agents left, there are still a lot of under-the-radar pick ups that could be valuable pieces to any team. Here are some key free agents in the NBA left that no one seems to be talking about.

  1. Zaza Pachulia

Why?

Every good team needs an enforcer and Zaza has done that quite well. In fact, most players hate him for it. Regardless, he’s a solid back up big man that can do a little bit of everything. Plus, that extra nastiness is needed come playoff time.

Best Destinations: Clippers, Wizards, Jazz, Pistons, Heat

2. Joe Johnson

Why?

I wrote about this in detail not too long ago, so I won’t bore you here, but the major point is that Joe still has it. His tenure with the Rockets made teams sour on him, but that wasn’t really fair considering how late in the season he joined them. Johnson can be a shooter off the bench for any contender in the league and should be signed as soon as the season ends for the BIG 3 League.

Best Destinations: Clippers, Lakers, Nuggets, Trail Blazers, 76ers

3. Shaun Livingston

Why?

Though he didn’t play a great deal of minutes this past season with the Warriors, he’s still the ultimate team guy. He’s still one of the smarter guards in the league and only takes good shots. If any team is looking to solidify their bench rotation, there’s no reason to not pick up Livingston. He’s even stated that he would like to finish his career with the team that drafted him, in the Clippers, but it remains to be seen whether LA or another contender picks him up. If not, retirement is probably on the way.

Best Destinations: Clippers, Lakers, Nuggets, or probably retirement.

4. Luol Deng

Why?

Though Deng looks older, he has shown with the Timberwolves that he can contribute in spurts. He can even be a mentor to younger players just as he’s been with the Wolves and Lakers. At this stage of his career however, he needs to be on a perennial playoff team if not a contender. He can’t be in for big time minutes anymore but he can be the leader of a bench mob for sure. Any team that wants to make it deep in the postseason will not regret signing the savvy and tough-as-nails veteran.

Best Destinations: Rockets, Clippers, Jazz, Spurs, 76ers

5. Thabo Sefolosha

Why?

Though his numbers don’t jump out at you necessarily, Thabo is another bench filler that can help right now. He’s still a solid defender and despite his low offensive output, he still shot 43% from beyond the arc last season with the Jazz. You need another “3 and D” guy to fill out your championship contending roster? Sefolosha is your man.

Best Destinations: Lakers, Celtics, Pacers, Nuggets, Rockets

6. Jodie Meeks

Why?

Meeks is a guy that you can put on any team and in any system. He can still shoot and is a capable defender when called upon. He’s a low-risk, high reward kind of guy and that’s why it’s so surprising he hasn’t been signed yet. Every team needs shooting. Any team could use Jodie Meeks.

Best Destinations: Pelicans, Suns, Magic, Hornets, Knicks

7. Ryan Anderson

Why?

He was the “stretch 4” before it became popular. It seems pretty weird that now that the league has moved in this direction, Anderson remains unsigned. Though he didn’t do much for the Heat last season, there’s no reason why he can’t fill up a playoff roster that needs more shooting. He’s still only 31 years old. He never causes any trouble and doesn’t make many bad decisions. He could easily come off the bench for 10-15 minutes a game for any team that needs it.

Best Destinations: 76ers, Pistons, Magic, Pelicans, Nuggets

8. Amir Johnson

Why?

Johnson is another guy who’s just well-suited for the back up big man role. His numbers aren’t great or anything but in limited minutes, he’s a strong body down low that can give you a couple baskets and rebounds and make a few stops while he’s on the court. He’s one of those veterans that everyone loves having on their team.

Best Destinations: 76ers, Suns, Timberwolves, Mavericks, Warriors

9. Corey Brewer

Why?

Brewer is perfect for any bench mob in the league. He’s a great hustle guy, has a lot of energy, and is one of the most underrated scorers in transition, within the league. He’s improved as a defender recently as well. Brewer is that pest that every good team needs. He shouldn’t be signing 10 Day contracts, he should be signing one to two year deals.

Best Destinations: 76ers, Rockets, Kings, Pistons, Warriors

10. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute

Though he has had a decent amount of injuries, Mbah a Moute should be given one last shot as a “3 and D” guy. He’s one of the most underrated defenders in the NBA and was a big part of why the Rockets were so good two seasons ago. Yes, the injuries add up, but with a shot at contention, you know he’ll work hard for any roster.
