After losing out on re-signing DE Carl Lawson to the Jets, the Cincinnati Bengals made quick work to replace him. Former New Orleans Saints DE Trey Hendrickson is signing a four year deal worth $60 million. $32 million of that comes in the first two years of the contract. Hendrickson is the first big name to sign with Cincinnati in this free agent frenzy.
The Saints originally drafted Hendrickson in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft. He was stashed away on the bench for the better part of his first three seasons. He went onto finished the 2020 season tied with Aaron Donald for second most sacks in the league with 13.5. Hendrickson made the most of his one year as an everyday starter. His ramp up in production led him to sign with Cincinnati.
New Orleans cap situation put them into a spot where they could not re-sign many guys and Hendrickson was one of those guys given the price tag he was going to command. It was announced late last week that Hendrickson would be testing free agency this year. He has tested it, and he has gotten paid like a true number one DE.
All contracts at this stage are not official. The legal tampering period does not mean that teams can sign anyone, they can only work out deals to be signed officially when the new league year opens on Wednesday. Teams also cannot talk directly to players and can only speak to agents at this stage. Everything changes come the league new year.
