Timo Werner Finalizing Move to Chelsea

After months of rumors that RB Leipzig superstar Timo Werner was set to make a move to the Premier League, the 24-year-old has all but sealed his arrival to Chelsea after agreeing to personal terms with the club. The German will arrive at Stamford Bridge next season just in time to compete for playing time on what has quickly become a crowded attacking platoon.

The Blues are set to send somewhere around $58 million dollars to the German club for Werner’s services. As for the player, his new contract is said to last for five years when he will earn around $210 thousand dollars per week.

Werner has blossomed into a superstar in Germany’s Bundesliga this season. Over 31 appearances in league competition, the striker has the second most goals with 26 and has an additional eight assists. According to WhoScored.com, Werner has the third highest player rating in the league this season, behind only Robert Lewandowski and Jadon Sancho, and has been named Man of the Match a league-high 10 times.

The Stuttgart native added an additional four goals over seven matches in the Champions League and two more in the DFB-Pokal. To put it bluntly, the kid knows how to bag goals in bunches. This season, he also leads all players in the top flight in Germany in hat tricks, where he has three. Easily his best performance came on November 2nd, when he scored three times and added three assists during his club’s 8-0 victory over Mainz.

Earlier on Thursday, the newest Blue talked about how he feels about his new adventure. “I look forward to next season with my new teammates, my new manager, and of course the Chelsea fans. Together, we have a very successful future ahead of us.”

Bringing Werner into the fold at Chelsea is yet another feather in the cap for one of Chelsea’s major directors, Marina Granovskaia. She has been instrumental in not only orchestrate a mammoth sponsorship deal with Nike, but also in bringing in talented players for reasonable prices. Over the past year, she’s brokered deals to bring in guys like Christian Pulisic and Mateo Kovacic, while also selling assets like Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata for high profits.

Starting next year, Chelsea could sport an attacking line ripe with some of the best young goal scorers in Europe. Guys like Werner and fellow newcomer Hakim Ziyech will have to shine in order to steal playing time from current Chelsea stalwarts like Tammy Abraham, Olivier Giroud, Pulisic, and Callum Hudson-Odoi. If nothing else, it’s going to be fascinating to see who will feature in a stacked lineup like that.

The only question now is whether or not Werner can raise above the lofty expectations he has right now to join the ranks of legendary strikers like Diego Costa and Didier Drogba. All I know is that I’ll be watching to find out.
