There is a lot of excitement surrounding the first year of Vince McMahon’s XFL. The NFL season just ended and we are already looking at the start of a new football season. With this new league comes some new rules. Field Goals are basically null and void.
RULE 1: EXTRA POINT PLAY
In the NFL, after you score a touchdown you kick a field goal to make it a seven point play. You also have the option to run a normal play from the line of scrimmage that can give you two points instead of one.
After a touchdown is completed you have three different options. You can run a play from the 2 yard line and get your team an extra point. You can run a play from the 5 yard line and get your team an extra two points. The third and final option would be to run a play from the 10 yard line and get your team and extra three points.
Why It Works:
We haven’t seen this rule in action just yet, but from the sounds of it, it should make the extra point play take a little more strategy than the typical NFL extra point. It also takes kicking the extra point out of the game. The NFL has already tried to make the extra point kick more interesting by pushing it back. Why not take it out completely and add in this setup?
Rule 2: Double Forward Pass
Anyone can throw the ball forward from behind the line of scrimmage. Once the ball is caught, the receiver cannot throw the ball again unless he is behind where the QB threw him the ball from.
You may pass the ball up to twice so long as the second man to throw the ball is still behind the line of scrimmage. The second passer does not have to be behind the first passer to continue the sequence.
Why It Works:
Half of the NFL rules are outdated and make for a rather boring and stale product. This would be a perfect way to re-invigorate the game while giving someone such as Taysom Hill or Julian Edleman the perfect opportunity to play some QB in their systems.
