Terence Crawford Needs to Stand Up

Terence Crawford ( 35-0, 26 KO’s) is an elite pound for pound boxer and currently the WBO Welterweight Champion. He defeated Jeff Horn, the former grade school teacher turned professional boxer, by TKO to earn a title in his third weight class. As a junior welterweight, Crawford was the undisputed champion, and for a brief period, held all four major belts, effectively cleaning out the entire division. His reign at welterweight has been less impressive.

Since moving up to the 147 pound weight class in June of 2018, his most impressive victory at the weight has been the chinny former champion Amir Khan. His next opponent is the largely unknown Egidijus Kavaliauskas (22-0-1, 17 KO’s) who’s only real opponent was David Avanesyan in 2018. Barring a huge upset, Crawford will show up for an easy win and fight whoever Bob Arum lines up for him next. Enough is enough! Terence Crawford needs to step it up and fight an elite challenge again in the same manner he was known for at junior welterweight.

2019 was an amazing year for the welterweight class. Errol Spence Jr. (26-0, 21 KO’s) stamped himself as the king of the welterweight with a perfect performance against pound for pound fighter Mikey Garcia, and then defeating elite welterweight Shawn Porter in a unification fight for fight of the year contender. Meanwhile Manny Pacquiao added to his already hall of fame legacy by defeating Keith Thurman for the WBA Welterweight title.

With all this action going on in the rest of the division, what is the excuse for Crawford? He can no longer use his promoter as an excuse for lack of fights, and needs to go out of his way to fight the elite of the division, the same way he was known for at lightweight and junior welterweight. Hopefully after Errol Spence recovers from his recent car crash and legal woes, Al Haymon and Bob Arum can come together to make a fight possible in 2020.
