Amid ongoing COVID-19 concerns, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee has officially announced that they will not be sending athletes to Tokyo this summer for the 2020 Olympics.
Team Canada’s athletes will not be attending the Summer Olympics unless they are postponed for a year.
Although many sports have been temporarily suspended or cancelled during the pandemic, the International Olympic Committee has stated they will not yet be postponing the Games. Earlier on Sunday, the IOC was given a four-week deadline to make a decision about whether to proceed with the 2020 Olympics or not.
Cancelling the Games entirely is not being considering, and the two options currently on the table are proceeding this summer, or pushing them off for a year.
Team Canada is the first country to pull its athletes from the Olympics. Whether anymore countries will follow the Canadians lead remains unknown.
