Should Kassian Be Suspended?

Should Kassian Be Suspended?

Saturday night’s Battle of Alberta featuring the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames definitely did not disappoint.

It seems as though the rivalry between the two Alberta teams has been reignited. Calgary eventually came out on top with a 4-3 victory, thanks to an early third period power play goal by Elias Lindholm that put the Flames up for good. The game was filled with chirping and hard hits, and one incident in particular that led to the winning Calgary power play goal.

With 1:54 remaining in the second period, Oilers forward Zack Kassian lost his cool on Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk, who has been known as an agitator in his young NHL career. Tkachuk had been pestering Kassian all game, pounding Kassian into the boards on multiple occasions. Some of the hits were forceful enough to knock the helmet off of his head. After one of these hits, Kassian appeared to have had enough of Tkachuk’s antics, grabbing him by the collar and ragdolling him while throwing multiple punches to the head area. When the dust settled, Kassian was assessed a 4-minute double minor for roughing as well as a 10-minute misconduct. The Flames scored the winning goal on the ensuing power play. Tkachuk received no discipline from the officials.

Below is a screenshot of one of the questionable hits Kassian received from Tkachuk:

Tkachuk was not given a penalty on this hit, even though the hit appears to be a bit high in Kassian’s head/neck area.

To watch the incident, click here. You can see Tkachuk give Kassian another hard hit into the boards that knocks his helmet off, and Kassian then deciding to settle the score once and for all.

Zack Kassian has a hearing on Monday with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety to discuss if he will be given any further discipline from the league. Tkachuk will not have any hearings.

Do you think Matthew Tkachuk deserved what came to him, or did Zack Kassian cross the line? Should Zack Kassian be suspended? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Tkachuk deserves to be fined and suspended for 4 games for the high hits he was giving. Kass got pissed off at this guy and gave it to him. Tkachuk is a dirty player should be kicked out of the NHL!
