Sharapova Ousted by Caroline Garcia

Sharapova Ousted by Caroline Garcia

It has been a rough go for Maria Sharapova since returning to the tennis world one year ago from facing a ban of fifteen months for testing positive to the use of a banned substance.

On Tuesday it didn’t get any easier as Sharapova lost in a tight match to Caroline Garcia of France 6-3, 6-7(6-8), 4-6 at the Stuttgart Open.

Maria took the first set without much difficulty but Garcia put up a fight in the second set as it ended up going to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, it was back and forth until at 6-7, Sharapova hit a forehand into the net to put the match even at 1 set apiece.

Sharapova got the early break to go up 2-0 in the third set but Garcia broke right back. Both players continued to play aggressively throughout the set. Garcia ended up getting the deciding break at 4-4 and held her service game to beat the Russian for the first time.

It has been a disappointing year so far for Maria. This marks her 4th straight loss and she hasn’t won a match since the second round of the Australian Open.

In losing this match, Sharapova will now drop out of the top 50. Since returning from her ban she has failed to make it back into the top 40 in the rankings.

Caroline Garcia came into the tournament ranked number 7 in the world and is 10-8 on the year.

She will hope to continue her success as she is scheduled to meet 15 year old Marta Kostyuk from the Ukraine on Wednesday.
