Sergio Agüero Breaks Goal Scoring Records

Legendary Manchester City ace Sergio Agüero made history on Saturday afternoon during a routine 6-1 victory over Aston Villa. The Argentine synonymous with the blue side of Manchester scored three goals during his team’s victory and thus became both the highest-scoring non-Englishman and the man with the most hat tricks in Premier Leauge history.

The 31-year-old striker ended the day with an incredible 177 goals in England’s top flight, two ahead of Frenchman Thierry Henry, who scored 175 during his equally memorable run with Arsenal. His current total put him tied for fourth in league history with Chelsea ace and current manager Frank Lampard.

Agüero passed Henry in perhaps his most appropriate fashion, with a hat-trick. Perhaps no other player in league history is as connected to one statistic in the Prem as Agüero is to a hat-trick, or at least three goals in a single match. In fact, as stated before, today also marked the day in which Manchester City’s striker passed legendary goalscorer Alan Shearer with his 12th career triple.

His first hat-trick occurred shortly after a then 23-year-old Agüero first made the move to Manchester from Atletico Madrid in 2011. He bagged three goals against Wigan Athletic. He would follow this with hat-tricks against big teams like Tottenham Hotspur in 2014, Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 2015, four goals against Leicester City in 2018, and perhaps most famously against Arsenal and Chelsea in consecutive weeks in early 2019.

Of course, while most of those matches are indeed both impressive and legendary in the eyes of many Manchester City fanatics, no other moment could illustrate Kun’s career than his league-clinching goal against Queens Park Rangers at the end of the 2011-12 season. With his goal late in injury-time, the Argentine became an instant favorite both inside the Etihad and on goal compilation videos online.

As of writing, Agüero currently rests tied with Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham for fifth for goalscoring leader in the league with 13. As for Manchester City, they are second in the league table.
