Coronavirus’ impact on the sports and entertainment world seemingly has no end. Per Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet, WWE Superstar Roman Reigns will NOT be facing Goldberg at WrestleMania 36, due to health concerns over Coronavirus (COVID-19).
According to “sources close to the situation”, Roman Reigns has requested that he no longer take part of any future tapings at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, up to and including WrestleMania 36. Reigns sighted the fact that he is immunocompromised due to his battle with leukemia, and is worried about the risk to his health.
Reigns was originally diagnosed with leukemia in 2007, while playing for the Minnesota Vikings. While he would go into remission for a number of years, it returned in late 2018, forcing Reigns to take almost 5 months off from the ring. Returning just in time for WrestleMania 35 in MetLife Stadium.
In a recent interview with Variety; Stephanie McMahon, WWE’s chief brand officer, commented on the heightened safety precautions that WWE is taking, as the company frantically tries to finish filming the shows leading up to, and including, WrestleMania weekend:
“At a typical event, talent are milling about, they’re at catering or wherever when they’re not actually in part of the show,” Stephanie explained. “That’s not allowed now. There’s extensive testing and screening when you first come in the facility regardless of whether you’re a talent, a crew member, or anyone else. Working with our doctors, you have your temperature taken. If you have a temperature over 100.4 degrees, you are automatically asked to leave” – Stephanie McMahon, Variety.com
However, even with these added procedures; Reigns is a cancer survivor, and is in a much higher risk category when it comes to Coronavirus (COVID-19). Thus no chances can be taken.
Reigns was slated to face Bill Goldberg, who is the current WWE Universal Champion. Goldberg had won the title by shockingly defeating “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt at WWE’s Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia in February. If Reigns is out for Mania, the question will now truly be … WHO’S NEXT? for Goldberg? (Sorry, couldn’t resist).
Currently, the three names being circulated are Braun Strowman, Sheamus, and Jeff Hardy.
Reigns isn’t the first person to drop out of WrestleMania due to COVID-19, he will be joining WWE Superstars Rey Mysterio and Dana Brooke, both of whom are quarantined due to fear that they may have contracted the virus.
