ROH Wrestling Books Event for Madison Square Garden in March 2019

ROH Wrestling Books Event for Madison Square Garden in March 2019

In a surprise move that may signify an interesting shift in professional wrestling in NYC, Madison Square Garden has been booked by a non-WWE entity.

It has been confirmed by Sinclair Broadcasting Group’s CEO Chris Ripley that there has been talks to hold a Ring of Honor show in the famous venue, possibly in March 2019.

Ripley, in an interview with the Baltimore Business Journal, had discussed the idea of expansion for ROH, which has seen progress in the form of a broadcast in Canada’s Reseau des Sports channel. In particular, Ripley had discussed the idea of running shows in bigger venues and taking advantage of “a very passionate fanbase”.

While this hasn’t been confirmed by the CEO, the assumption is that the success of All In‘s ticket sales and the heralded Fox-WWE deal for $1B+ may have lit a fire under the company to reach out in the wrestling market, which includes a show in MSG.

This is a highly significant play from Sinclair, as MSG is considered in many wrestling circles to be WWE’s home arena. However, given WWE’s increased business with Brooklyn’s Barclays Center as of late (most notably for Wrestlemania week next year), it’s been noted that MSG has been sending out feelers to other promotions in response to being left out.

As of now, there has been no word in regards to the contents of the event, nor the event’s official title. Information will be updated as soon as the story develops.

With the “exclusivity” of MSG now out of the picture and ROH jumping in with a booking, it will be interesting to see how other companies will react as well.
