You’d be forgiven if you believed that Liverpool was finished with bringing in new players after they signed both Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota over the past few days. However, reports now indicate that the reigning Premier League champions are closing in on Watford forward Ismaïla Sarr. According to France Football, one of the most prominent football sources in Europe and the publication responsible for giving out the Ballon d’Or, Liverpool have reportedly agreed to pay around 35-40 million euros for Watford’s young star.
Sarr was a major target for Liverpool for most of this summer, and it’s easy to understand why. The Senegalese international had a formidable inaugural season in England’s top flight. Over 28 matches played last year, he scored five times and showed flashes of brilliance, all the while suiting up for a club that failed to survive a fierce relegation battle for much of the season. Along with guys like Troy Deeney, Abdoulaye Doucoure, and Roberto Pereyra, Sarr was a part of one of the more intriguing teams to fall down to the Championship over the past decade.
For Liverpool fans, Sarr will be best remembered as the key contributor to Liverpool’s first loss of the 2019-20 Premier League campaign. On what has so far been Sarr’s finest performance, the 22-year-old was a part of all three goals Watford put past Alisson Becker (two goals, one assist). To many LFC supporters, that was the game where Sarr became a potential transfer target.
Liverpool isn’t the only team that is reportedly looking into bringing him in, with further reports indicating that both Manchester United and Everton have varying levels of interest. However there is no word on whether or not either of those clubs have reached out to Vicarage Road.
If Liverpool do end up signing Sarr, it should signal the end for some longtime Reds, including Divock Origi, Rhian Brewster, and Harry Wilson. Sarr is both a winger and a straight up striker, so Klopp would be keen to play his new man alongside fellow new player Jota and his established big three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane. We will continue to monitor the progression of this potential move in the coming days.
