According to multiple reports coming from France, striker Edinson Cavani is set to sign a two-year contract with Manchester United. The 33-year-old recently left Paris Saint-Germain after seven wildly successful seasons, and was being linked with a number of big clubs from all across Europe including Benfica, Real Madrid, and Juventus. “El Matador” is set to fly to Manchester later this evening for his health evaluation and United should unveil him as their newest signing as soon as Sunday.
Cavani has been one of Europe’s best strikers since he moved from Italian club Parma to Napoli back in 2011. Over his three year span with the “Gli Azzurri”, he appeared in 138 matches and scored an incredible 104 times. While he didn’t help lead his club to any trophies besides a Coppa Italia in 2012, he did pick up three Serie A Team of the Year selections and was the league’s top scorer during the 2012-13 campaign.
After the 2013 campaign completed, Cavani made the move over to France to play for Paris Saint-Germain. He scored 25 goals in all competitions during his first year in Paris and along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, helped the club win the League title, the Coupe de la Ligue, and the Trophee des Champions.
Over his six successive years in France, Cavani would add five more league titles, four more Coupe de la Ligues, four more Trophee des Champions, and four Coupe de Frances. Additionally, he was Ligue One’s top goalscorer twice and was named the league’s Best Foreign Player in 2017.
United will certainly welcome Cavani as they are in desperate need of a sure footed striker at the club. As of right now, the club only has two number nines, Anthony Martial and Odion Ighalo. While Martial is one of the club’s best players, Ighalo has proven to be an injury-prone backup. With him set to return to China after the new year, Cavani can help sure up the attack as either a second option striker or as a winger if either Marcus Rashford or Mason Greenwood go down.
Once Cavani does sign on the dotted line at Manchester, he will become United’s second major signing of this summer transfer window following Donny van de Beek’s arrival early last month. United also famously attempted to bring in Jadon Sancho, as well as Porto’s full back Alex Telles. With little time remaining during this window, Cavani may be the squad’s final arrival before the winter.
