Race for Vezina Heating Up

Race for Vezina Heating Up

With less than a month remaining in the regular season, there are several goaltenders making their cases for a Vezina Trophy nomination.

As of right now, if the season were to end today I feel Andrei Vasilevskiy, Pekka Rinne, and Connor Hellebuyck are the three goalies that have made the best case for a Vezina Trophy.

Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy currently leads the league in wins with 40, and is tied for most shutouts with 7.

Vasilevskiy also has recorded an impressive .925 save percentage (8th in the league), and a solid 2.45 goals against average.

However, I feel Vasilevskiy needs to finish the season just as he has been playing and with rumors of Vasilevskiy feeling more fatigued than he ever has, one can only wonder if he can push through the last stretch of the season.

Nashville Predators’ Pekka Rinne has also made an impressive campaign for a Vezina Trophy.

Rinne currently has the second most wins with 37, and is tied with Vasilevskiy for most shutouts with 7.

The Finnish Goalie also has a save percentage of .928 (5th in league), and a goals against average of 2.28 (6th in the league).

Out of these three goaltenders I feel Rinne has the best all around stats as Vasilevskiy’s goals against average is not even in the top ten in the league.

Winnipeg Jets’ Connor Hellebuyck has stepped up for the Jets and has had an incredible season.

Hellebuyck is currently third in the league in both wins and shutouts, with 35 and 6 respectively.

With a 2.39 goals against average (9th in the league), and a .923 save percentage Hellebuyck has found his way into Vezina talks.

If Hellebuyck can finish the season strong and record another shutout or two, there’s no reason why he should not be considered for the Vezina.

Other goalies that could be considered include St. Louis’ Carter Hutton, Anaheim’s John Gibson, and Columbus’ Sergei Bobrovsky.

Hutton has a league best 2.02 goals against average, and .934 save percentage, however with an average 16 wins and 3 shutouts, Hutton’s argument for a Vezina is pretty hard.

Gibson comes into the argument with his .926 save percentage, 25 wins, and 2.49 goals against.

However Gibson will need to record several shutouts and wins to obtain the Vezina.

Last year Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky has had another strong season with 28 wins, 4 shutouts, 2.44 goals against average, and a .920 save percentage.

It just seems like Bobrovsky is a little behind the league’s best this year to claim a second straight Vezina.
