Querrey Topples Wawrinka At Queens

American Sam Querrey saved 12 break points in a clutch performance on Wednesday to defeat Stan Wawrinka at the Queen’s Club Championship 7-5, 6-7(3-7), 6-1.

Despite 13 aces in the first set, Querrey found himself in trouble serving at 4-5 in the set. In that game, Stan had several set points to break Querrey but he let them slip away. It turned out to be extremely costly as Querrey broke Wawrinka on his next service game, and then served out for the set.

Both players held on serve for the entire second set with it leading to a tiebreaker. It was Stan this time that was able to bear down, and at set point sent a forehand winner cross-court to even up the match.

The first break in the third set came in the fourth game when Sam was able to break Wawrinka. Querrey cruised from that point on, not giving up any more games, and on match point served his 25th ace to take the match.

With the win, Querrey advances to the quarter-final at the Queen’s Club for the second year in a row, and moves to 13-11 on the year.

The 33-year-old Wawrinka has been working hard to get back into the swing of things since having double knee surgery in 2017. With the loss he is now 5-8 on the year.

Prior to the match, Querrey had only beaten the three-time Grand Slam champion once in six tries.

Next up for Querrey is Marin Cilic who beat Gilles Muller. They are set to play on Friday.
