Newgarden Claims Top Spot at Road America

Josef Newgarden finished where he started at Road America on Sunday leading all but two laps on the way to his third win of the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series season at the 14-turn 4.014 mile road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

The No. 1 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet finished ahead of Andretti Autosport driver Ryan Hunter-Reay, while Scott Dixon claimed third in the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda.  Takuma Sato and rookie Robert Wickens rounded out the top five.

The win by Newgarden marked the 202nd professional win for the Roger Penske run team in its 51 years of racing competition.  With the win, Newgarden moves to fifth in points standings while Dixon still holds the lead after ten races. Seven races remain on the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series calendar with Iowa Speedway next on tap for the series in July.

Penske Racing teammate Will Power, winner of the 2018 Indianapolis 500, suffered a polar opposite day compared to his teammate.  Power ended the day in last place after only completing two laps, which dropped him to fifth in point. Alexander Rossi also had a troublesome day and finished 16th after a front suspension issue crippled his car with 17 laps remaining.

2018 Verizon IndyCar Series Point Standings (post Road America)

  2. Ryan Hunter-Reay (348)
  3. Alexander Rossi (348)
  4. Josef Newgarden (343)
  5. Will Power (328)

The series heads to Iowa Speedway on July 8th for the Iowa Corn 300.  The race from the 0.894-mile oval airs live at 2 p.m. ET on NBCSN.
