New York Rangers Win 1st Overall Pick in 2020 NHL Entry Draft

During the First Portion of the NHL Draft Lottery, all the teams not eligible for the Qualifying Rounds were hoping to win the 1st overall pick, but in a surprise twist, a losing team from the qualifying rounds will win the 1st overall pick and now we know what team will be selecting first overall. On Monday, it was announced during the second portion of the NHL Draft Lottery that The New York Rangers will be picking 1st overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. The last 16 selections for the first round of the draft will be determined by the results of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. New York had a  12.5% chance of winning the first overall pick heading into the lottery

New York is coming off finishing 37-28-5 before the league stopped play and losing in the Stanley Cup Qualifying Rounds to The Carolina Hurricanes in 3 Games. The last time New York had the first overall pick, was in 1965 where they selected Andre Veilleux.

Although the Stanley Cup Playoffs are still being played and the NHL is nowhere close to the draft, Alexis Lafrenière of the Rimouski Océanic in the QMJHL is the clear favorite to be the first player selected leading up to the draft.
