Legendary NASCAR driver and owner Robert Glenn “Junior” Johnson Jr., passed away Thursday at the age of 88.
The winner of 50 races during the 1950’s and 1960’s, Johnson was a dominant driver during the early years of the sport. However, Johnson achieved his biggest success as an owners. Johnson’s drivers racked up an impressive 123 wins and six championships. Johnson was also one of main people behind RJ Reynolds Tobacco company signing on to sponsor NASCAR. Without that sponsor, the sport of NASCAR may not be where it is now.
The impact Junior Johnson has had on this sport cannot be summed up in words. From driving, to owning a team and everything in between, Johnson was one of the pioneers of NASCAR.
Rest in peace Junior Johnson, and thank you.
