Move Over Goodell…Manfred Is The Worst Commissioner In Sports

For years, one thing has united us sports fans. That one thing has always been “Roger Goodell is the worst commissioner in sports”. That seems to be changing though, as Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has now taken the position all because of how he has handled the Houston Astros cheating scandal.

When Oakland Athletic’s pitcher Mike Fiers came out with the bombshell accusation, baseball fans around the world started to speculate what the punishment would be. Would AJ Hinch get fired? Would the players all be suspended? Would they take away the World Series title? Well when the punishments were announced, many around baseball were left thinking, “that’s it?”.

Bleacher Report

Not one player on the 2017 Houston Astros team was punished in any way. AJ Hinch and General Manager Jeff Luhnow were issued one-year suspensions and were eventually fired from the team. The team itself was stripped of 4 high draft picks and given a $5M fine.

For the past few weeks, people have been clamoring for MLB to strip the 2017 World Series title from the Astros. What does Rob Manfred have to say about that? Oh, nothing except spit in the face of the entire league and everything it’s stood for in 116 years. Manfred said: “The idea of an asterisk or asking for a piece of metal back seems like a futile act.” So that’s all the World Series trophy is? A piece of metal? Why even play for it? I wouldn’t want to play for just a “piece of metal.” Not to mention Bobby, it’s more than just the trophy you idiot! The Astros having that trophy allows them to proudly display it for the entire world. And no matter how much they make it seem like they’re upset about it, the Astros don’t give a damn about what they did.

Even though it has an asterisk, it doesn’t matter. They still get to call themselves World Series Champions. Manfred even said: “ I think if you watch the players, watch their faces when they have to deal with this issue publicly, they have paid a price.” Oh really? So that’s it? That’s the big punishment? They’re sad? If that’s the case, why is Pete Rose still not in the Hall of Fame? Hasn’t he been sad? Hasn’t he suffered enough? Not to mention as I said earlier, the Astros don’t care! They’re not suspended at all, they’re not losing any money and they can still say they’re champions.

Manfred even went on to say that any pitcher that throws at any Astros player will be punished very strictly. That’s nice Rob, defend them even more. Now I don’t want to see anybody get hurt, even if it is an Astros player. But I’m a baseball player, and I can say us baseball players are sensitive people. You don’t bunt for a hit when there’s a no-no going, you don’t cross the pitcher’s mound, don’t stare at your home run for too long, and don’t cheat. If you do one of those things, it’s more than likely you’ll be getting beaned.

There are going to be brawls, I guarantee it. Houston is going to go into every visiting ballpark this season and get bombarded with boos from the fans. The people that didn’t cheat will be upset (rightfully so) and since there was no punishment for the players, they want to dish out their own punishment. I mean obviously you don’t want Jose Altuve taking 4 pitches to the back, but you can’t tell me there aren’t pitchers out there that can’t wait to deliver some chin music.

Manfred said he would’ve punished the players “in a perfect world.” BUT YOU’RE THE COMMISSIONER! You could do whatever you want! Are you afraid of the MLB Players Association? So you’re going to punish 80% of the players who didn’t cheat because you don’t want to anger the MLBPA? Or because there’s a new CBA coming up and you want to make sure everything works out well? I mean come on man, this is ridiculous.

Not only the Astros scandal but Manfred’s proposed playoff format changes. I’m not even going to try to explain the entire changes he’s thinking about because they’re too confusing. It pretty much adds up to teams picking their opponents in the playoffs. Like…what?! Why?! It’s bad enough that teams have to play 162 games in a season just for it to come down to one Wild Card game, but now let’s have teams pick their opponents? No wonder Trevor Bauer called Manfred a joke.

I used to really like Rob Manfred. In my opinion, Adam Silver is the best commissioner in sports today, and I really liked Rob Manfred when he first started. But this week has just been absolutely horrible for Manfred. He’s managed to anger 90% of baseball fans, and disrespected the World Series by calling the trophy a “piece of metal.” I don’t know what is going on in his head, but he’s definitely passed Roger Goodell and is the worst commissioner in sports. And when people say you’re worse than Goodell??? You KNOW you have a problem.
