More Forwards: Islanders Sign Johnston and Kovar

The New York Islanders have re-signed Ross Johnston to a four-year deal, electing not to release the details of the contract to the public just yet.

The 24-year-old was called up from the AHL by Garth Snow last season in a surprise move. Johnston provided the Islanders with six points in the 24 games he played, which is on pace for 21 points in a full 82-game season.

Johnston impressed the club with a strong, old-school-style defense. He also tallied 62 penalty minutes in those 24 games for the blue and orange.

Many are surprised, however, at the length of the contract. Four years for Johnston and the Islanders is surprising, considering the team has 15 NHL forwards under contract already, not including Kieffer Bellows, Michael De Colle, Tanner Fritz and Joshua Ho-Sang.

Time will tell what Lamoriello has planned for the team.

In another move on Monday, the Islanders signed Russian Jan Kovar to a one-year deal worth just $2 million. This signing is a low-risk high-reward for New York, as they look to add options up the middle.

Speculation began on the future of Brock Nelson with the signing of Kovar. However, Lamoriello remains confident the roster will include Nelson next season.
