So as you may all know by now, American soccer great Clint Dempsey has elected to hang up his cleats and put his shin guards away after a 15-year professional career. The MLS and EPL standout finishes his tenure with 157 goals in 475 matches, four MLS cup title appearances with one win, a host of individual awards for club and country, and the respect of players, coaches, and fans all over the world.
Following his joint announcement with the Seattle Sounders, MLS commissioner Don Garber issued their own statement on the manner on Twitter. It read the following.
Clint Dempsey has been one of the most impactful players in the history of the sport in this country. From his early success with the New England Revolution to his achievements both as a top player in the English Premier League and for the U.S. Men’s National Team, Clint showed us there are no limits for an American player. His decision to sign with the Sounders in 2013 in the prime of his career sent a message to the global soccer community that MLS was a league on the rise. On behalf of our fans, our players, our clubs, and the entire MLS family, I want to congratulate Clint on his retirement and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
It is currently not known what Dempsey plans on doing now that he is out of the sport that he’s been in for upwards of 20 years, however, we will be sure you all know when that information is available. Just keep it locked on to the Game Changer Sports Network!
