Mississippi State HC Joe Moorhead, former OC at Penn State, spoke ahead of Nick Saban today at the SEC media day which is taking place at the College Football HOF in Atlanta. Moorhead was happy to be speaking ahead of Saban. He joked, “It would kind of be like taking the stage after the Beatles.”
Last season PSU’s offense ranked 19th in the FBS in total offense. Mississippi State was tied for 46th. When asked how his new quarterback room compares to last year’s he said there is a lot of similarities. “Both guys can make all the throws, make it with their legs,” comparing Trace McSorley to Nick Fitzgerald.
Moorhead acknowledged the challenge of playing in the SEC, stating, “Alabama is the standard in our conference. We’re looking to elevate our program from good to great.”
The Bulldogs will return 17 starters this season, 9 offensive, and 8 defensive. Notable games on their schedule include: Florida, Auburn, LSU, Texas A&M, Alabama, and Ole Miss.
Mississippi State will face their old head coach, Dan Mullen, when they play Florida on 9/29. Coach Moorhead said he is excited to play Ole Miss in the traditional Egg Bowl, “It’s important to our school, our state.”
