Mercedes Martinez Signs with WWE

As reported by SoCalUncensored , independent wrestling star Mercedes Martinez has signed with WWE and will be reporting to the Performance Center at a later date this month.

As of this writing, neither WWE nor Martinez herself has officially confirmed the signing. However, AWS (Alternative Wrestling Show) promoter Bart Kapitzke confirmed the story. Martinez is currently the AWS Heavyweight Champion, and Kapitzke has stated that the promotion will host a tournament to crown its new champion.

To call the 39-year old ring veteran Martinez a successful wrestler would a massive understatement; as she has either competed for or won a championship in nearly every promotion she has ever been in. Martinez first graced a WWE ring in 2017, when she participated in the inaugural Mae Young Classic where she stormed through the competition. Only to fall to Shayna Baszler in the semifinals.

She would go on to appear on a few episodes of NXT, most notable for her match against Ember Moon in 2018, and even returning for the 2018 MYC, losing in the second round to japanese sensation: Meiko Satomura.

Since her time in WWE, Martinez has been busy racking up wins and championships on the indie scene, earning the #10 spot on Sports Illustrated’s Top 10 Women Wrestlers of 2019 list! The article praises Martinez for her work ethic and the amazing presence that she brings to a ring:

“…No matter the venue, her work ethic in the ring never changed. Martinez works an extremely physical, nonstop style, and her success is a testament to an unwavering desire to get better, which is a lesson for both wrestlers looking to break into the business, as well as talent who are already stars”  -Justin Barrasso, Sports Illustrated.

Martinez has also made appearances in AEW in the last year. She appeared at AEW’s All Out pay-per-view in August, where she was a surprise final entrant in the Women’s Casino Battle Royale, as well as making appearances on AEW Dark. This prompted many to speculate that we’d be seeing Martinez on AEW Dynamite, rather than WWE programing. Especially given the general consensus that AEW’s biggest sore spot currently is it’s women’s division.

Clearly, any negotiations between the company and Martinez did not materialize

What’s Martinez’s value in WWE? The simple answer is endless.

Martinez is a nearly 20 year veteran who has been all over the world and has worked some of the best wrestlers in the world. Added to the fact that she seems to be only getting better with age; Martinez can both enhance the younger talent around her, and hold down a division on any brand.
