Leading up to the NBA Draft, there have been talks involving the New Orleans Pelicans and the 10th overall pick of the 2021 NBA Draft. With the draft on Thursday, the team wasted no time making a move. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, New Orleans is sending the 10th and 40th overall pick, Eric Bledsoe, Steven Adams, and a 2022 1st Round Pick, to the Memphis Grizzlies for the 17th and 52nd overall pick, and Jonas Valanciunas. Bledsoe and Adams both are under contract until 2023 while Valanciunas is entering the final year of his contract.
With New Orleans trading away Bledsoe and Adams, the team now has more cap space to improve the roster in free agency. With Lonzo Ball and Kyle Lowry as free agents this off-season, the team needed to make more cap space. Valanciunas is a decent player but the main objective is creating cap space and New Orleans did just that.
For Memphis, the team is now in a position to add a player that can make an impact right now if they trade the 10th overall pick. With teams still wanting to trade up, Memphis has several ways to go with the 10th overall pick.
According to Chris Haynes, Eric Bledsoe is not expected to stay in Memphis despite being traded there. Bledsoe will be making $18.1 million this upcoming season and $19.4 million next season with only $3.9 million guaranteed.
