Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
According to sources, the 22-year-old superstar has gone into quarantine at his home in Arizona, hoping to be eligible and healthy enough to travel back to Toronto for the team’s training camp opening on July 10.
Maple Leafs’ goaltender Fredrick Andersen spent much of his break from play living with Matthews, and the goalie did not test positive for COVID-19. Andersen is no longer living with Matthews and has left Arizona.
Matthews is not the only athlete in Arizona to test positive for the virus. Amid a state-wide outbreak, multiple Arizona Coyotes players have also tested positive.
Auston Matthews joins Ezekiel Elliott as the two highest-profiles athletes to contract the virus in recent days.
