With the NHL no longer resuming regular season play when hockey returns, the league have announced the nominees for most awards although some have yet to be released. For the Vezina Trophy ,which is awarded to the best goalie each season, the nominees are Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets, Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins and Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
With the Jets thin on the blue line all season, Connor Hellebuyck carried the team on his back. He was 31-21-5 with a 2.57 GAA and a save percentage of .922, as well as starting 58 games which is tied for the most games started by a goaltender during the abbreviated season. Hellebuyck also had the most shots against with 1796 and had the most shutouts where he didn’t allow a goal in six different games.
Tuukka Rask was 26-8-6 on the Bruins who as a team held the best regular season record in the league. He had a GAA of 2.12 and a save percentage of .929. Among goalies vying for the Vezina Trophy, Rask had the best GAA and save percentage.
Andrei Vasilevskiy, the reigning Vezina trophy winner, is on the ballot for the third straight year and will hope to win the award for the second consecutive season. He was 35-14-3 with a GAA of 2.56 and a .917 save percentage. Vasilevskiy also recorded more wins than any goalie in the league and among qualified goaltenders for the award, he was third in shots (1605), saves (1472) and starts (52).
With all of Hellebuyck, Rask and Vasilevskiy deserving of the award for different reasons, it will be interesting to see who ends up victorious. The vote for the Vezina trophy is tallied among NHL general managers. There is currently no set date for when the award winners will be announced.
