Heading into the game against the Los Angeles Rams, the New England Patriots have won 4 out of the last 5 games, to keep their playoff dreams alive. Unfortunately for New England, making the playoffs just got a lot tougher after losing to the Los Angeles Rams 24-3.
Cam Akers was a huge part of the success on the offensive side of the ball for Los Angeles running for 171 yards on 29 carries. While New England had an answer for the Los Angeles Chargers and the Arizona Cardinals run game, the team had no answer for Akers throughout the entire game.
Even though Cam Akers was the focal point of the offense, Jarred Goff had a decent game, throwing for 137 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception while completing 16 out of 25 passes.
Despite losing the game, the New England Patriots had 3 Wide Receivers catching for more yards than the entire Los Angeles wide receiving core. Even though New England had more production out of their Wide Receivers, it did not result in points
Although the team scored 24 points, the biggest reason Los Angeles beat New England was due to a phenomenal performance by the Rams defense. The defense stopped New England every chance they had at moving the ball downfield and created turnovers. Along with Aaron Donald, Leonard Floyd, and Troy Reeder, Kenny Young made a huge impact on the defense and it paid off in a pick-six in the second quarter.
On the New England side of the ball, Cam Newton was dreadful the entire game before getting benched for Jarrett Stidham, throwing for 119 yards, 1 interception while completing 9 out of 16 passes. On the ground, Newton ran for 16 yards on 7 carries.
Coming in for Newton, Jarrett Stidham threw for 27 yards while completing 5 out of 7 passes. Even though we only saw a sample size of Stidham, he looked better than Cam Newton when it came to throwing the ball and making plays.
N’Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd, and Jakobi Myers combined for 12 catches for 144 yards. Throughout the entire game, New England could not get any sort of offense. Every time New England had a chance to get some offensive momentum, it led to the team punting the ball or turning over the ball.
Even though the offense only scored 3 points, the defense did not do any better. Outside of an interception by Myles Bryant, New England looked flat on defense, having no answer for Cam Akers allowing him to rush for over 100 yards. Another thing they failed to do was get pressure on Jarred Goff only having 1 sack throughout the entire game.
After winning against New England, Los Angeles will be hosting the New York Jets on Sunday at SoFi Stadium. New York is coming off a 40-3 loss against the Seattle Seahawks. With the loss to Seattle, New York is riding a 13 game losing streak.
After losing against Los Angeles, New England will be heading to Hard Rock Stadium and play the Miami Dolphins. Miami is coming off a 33-27 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs.
