Lions @ Cardinals Recap: Lions Win, Murray Throws Three Picks

Lions Capitalize on Murray’s Interceptions to get The Win!!

Matthew Stafford and the Lions broke an 11-game losing streak dating back to last season in a win against the Arizona Cardinals.  Stafford passed for 2 touchdown and had 0 interceptions for the first time this season.  On the other side of the ball, Kyler Murray had season highs with 2 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions.  Overall, this was not a pretty game for either team.  Stafford led the Lions on the final drive for Matt Prater to hit the winning field goal with time running out.

Adrian Peterson led the Lions backfield with 75 yards on 22 carries.  Peterson is the teams leader in carries and rushing yards over Kerryon Johnson and Rookie D’Andre Swift. Peterson is racking up yards, sitting 5th on the all-time rushing leaders list behind Barry Sanders by approximately 844 Yards after week 3. Overall, the Lions seem to be running a very balance offense between the passing and the running games.

Stafford threw a touchdown pass to Kenny Golladay on his first game of the season. Golladay, who was sidelined for the first two weeks due to a hamstring injury, ended the day with 1 touchdown and 57 yards on 6 receptions from Stafford. Golladay adds a huge target for Stafford and could have been a difference maker in the first 2 games. He led the Lions in receiving yards in 2018 and 2019, and in his first game of 2020, looks like he will be Stafford’s favorite and most reliable target. The Lions will be facing division rival and undefeated Green Bay Packers next week, looking to snap a three game losing streak against the Packers as well.

Kyler Murray entered the 2020 season with a lot to improved upon, and during this game, it definitely showed. Regardless of that, and even in a loss, there is plenty of good to take away from the Cardinals performance against the Lions. Murray has now connected with his brand new number one receiver DeAndre Hopkins for over 100 receiving yards in 2 out of the first 3 games of the season. Another positive for the Cardinals was Andy Isabella, who scored twice on the day on four targets. With Hopkins as the number one wide receiver drawing double teams, Isabella could be a huge factor in the offense. The real story line after this game could be, “How will Kyler Murray deal with the loss and bounce back next week?”

The Cardinals are now tied at 2-1 with the Rams and the 49ers in the NFC West. They will face off the Panthers in week four, who are coming off a win over the Chargers. The Lions will host the 1-2 New Orleans Saints, with both teams trying end the fourth week of the season at 2-2.
