Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has been issued a grid penalty that will drop him to 14th position at the start of Sunday’s Styrian Grand Prix in Austria. The penalty was issued after FIA officials deemed that he impeded the qualifying run of Daniil Kvyat, resulting in Leclerc starting 14th instead of 11th. Ferrari as a team continues to struggle so far this season, as Leclerc’s teammate Sebastien Vettel will roll off 10th.
Formula 1 stewards stated, “Video evidence and telemetry data clearly showed that the driver of Car 26 (Kvyat) was impeded by Car 16 (Leclerc) in turns 9 and 10. Although the weather conditions might have affected the visibility in the rear view mirrors and the driver had no intention of impeding another car, the Stewards determine that the driver of Car 16 must have been aware of Car 26 approaching, could have reacted differently and therefore impose the above mentioned penalty.”
