Kelly Cup Playoff Picture Week 3

Kelly Cup Playoff Picture Week 3

The March to the Kelly Cup Playoffs is officially here and some teams continue to stay in playoff contention, while others are slowly falling out. The Newfoundland Growlers and Cincinnati Cyclones continue to show dominance in their divisions, while teams like the Maine Mariners, Orlando Solar Bears, and the Kalamazoo Wings are on fire leading to their March to the playoffs. On the other hand the Reading Royals (2-7-1 in their last 10) and South Carolina Stingrays (0-8-3 in their last 11) are slowly eliminating themselves from the playoff picture. Here is your up to date playoff picture with magic and tragic numbers, my top 5 games in each division, and your latest Brabham Cup picture.

All times are Eastern Standard Time

North Division (Games Played-Points-Potential Points)

  1. Newfoundland Growlers 54-76-112
  2. Adirondack Thunder 55-67-101
  3. Manchester Monarchs 57-62-92
  4. Maine Mariners 56-61-93
  5. Brampton Beast 55-58-92
  6. Worcester Railers 55-57-91
  7. Reading Royals 55-55-89

This week the North Division playoff picture has a new entrant. The Maine Mariners have made key trades and are 8-2 in their last 10 games and have climbed into the 4th spot. The Brampton Beast were in 4th last week, but are on a 4 game losing streak with their last loss being 6-2 against the Wheeling Nailers. The Newfoundland Growlers and Adirondack Thunder still have the clearer paths to the Kelly Cup playoffs. The Reading Royals and Worcester Railers need to go streaking if they want a chance.

Magic Numbers: Newfoundland Growlers (16) Adirondack Thunder (24)

Tragic Numbers: None for now

Games to Watch:

  1. Adirondack Thunder at Manchester Monarchs 7:00pm on March 1st, 6:00pm on March 2nd
  2. Brampton Beast at Newfoundland Growlers 5:30pm on March 1st/2nd
  3. Adirondack Thunder at Worcester Railers 3:00pm on March 3rd
  4. Reading Royals at Newfoundland Growlers 5:30pm on March 5th/6th
  5. Maine Mariners at Utah Grizzlies 9:05pm on March 1st/2nd

South Division (Games Played-Points-Potential Points)

  1. Florida Everblades 56-79-111
  2. Orlando Solar Bears 53-64-102
  3. Jacksonville Icemen 56-62-94
  4. South Carolina Stingrays 56-55-87
  5. Atlanta Gladiators 53-54-92
  6. Norfolk Admirals 56-53-85
  7. Greenville Swamp Rabbits 58-45-73

The South Division looks the same this week, but could potentially debut a new team next week due to the South Carolina Stingrays being 0-8-3 in their last 11. The Stingrays are only 1 point above the Atlanta Gladiators (3 games on hand) and 2 points above Norfolk. The Orlando Solar Bears are 8-1-1 in their last 10 and the Florida Everblades have a chance to clinch a playoff spot this weekend.

Magic Numbers: Florida Everblades (8), Orlando Solar Bears (23), and Jacksonville Icemen (25)

Tragic Numbers:  Greenville Swamp Rabbits (18) and Norfolk Admirals (30)

Games to Watch:

  1.  Orlando Solar Bears at Florida Everblades 7:30pm on March 1st
  2. South Carolina Stingrays at Jacksonville Icemen 7:30pm on March 1st
  3. Greenville Swamp Rabbits at Atlanta Gladiators 7:35pm on March 1st
  4. Florida Everblades at Jacksonville Icemen 3:00pm on March 3rd
  5. Norfolk Admirals at Maine Mariners 7:00pm March 6th

Central Division (Games Played-Points-Potential Points)

  1. Cincinnati Cyclones 54-83-119
  2. Toledo Walleye 53-70-108
  3. Kalamazoo Wings 54-61-97
  4. Fort Wayne Komets 52-59-99
  5. Wheeling Nailers 55-56-90
  6. Indy Fuel 54-55-91

The Central Division is still close and the bottom four looks the same this week as last, but after this weekend it can change drastically. All 6 teams have 3 divisional games this weekend and the Cyclones can clinch a playoff spot with 3 wins or other scenarios that I will map out in playoff scenarios at the bottom. The Kalamazoo Wings are 7-2-1 in their last 10 and are starting to put pressure on the Wheeling Nailers and Indy Fuel who are trying to stay in contention.

Magic Numbers: Cincinnati Cyclones (8) and Toledo Walleye (21)

Tragic Numbers: None at the moment

Games To Watch:

  1. Fort Wayne Komets at Kalamazoo 7:30pm on March 1st
  2. Fort Wayne at Wheeling Nailers 3:00pm on March 3rd
  3. Cincinnati Cyclones at Wheeling Nailers 7:00pm on March 2nd
  4. Fort Wayne at Toledo 7:15pm on March 2nd
  5. Cincinnati at Kalamazoo 3:00pm on March 3rd

Mountain Division (Games Played-Points-Potential Points)

  1. Idaho Steelheads 56-70-102
  2. Tulsa Oilers 57-68-98
  3. Utah Grizzlies 55-68-102
  4. Kansas City Mavericks 53-60-98
  5. Wichita Thunder  58-53-81
  6. Rapid City Rush 58-52-80
  7. Allen Americans 58-46-74

Like I said last week the Mountain Division seems like the playoff teams are set, but can finish anywhere from 1-4. Now remember anything can happen, so don’t think this is 100%. Wichita or Rapid City can go on a long win streak, while K.C. goes on a losing streak to change everything.

Magic Numbers: Idaho Steelheads (11), Utah Grizzlies (13), Tulsa Oilers (13), and Kansas City Mavericks (21)

Tragic Numbers: Allen Americans (14), Rapid City Rush (20), and Wichita Thunder (21)

Games to Watch

  1.  Idaho Steelheads at  Kansas City Mavericks 8:05pm on March 1st/2nd
  2.  Kansas City Mavericks at Tulsa Oilers 5:05pm on March 3rd
  3.  Wichita Thunder at Idaho Steelheads 9:10pm on March 6th
  4.  Allen Americans at Tulsa Oilers 8:05pm on March 2nd
  5. Utah Grizzlies at Rapid City Rush 9:05pm on March 6th

Brabham Cup:

The Brabham Cup is presented to the team with the best regular season record and guarantees home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs. Here are the top 5 teams and where they stand:

  1.  Cincinnati Cyclones  38-9-4-3 83 Points
  2.  Florida Everblades   37-14-5-0 79 Points
  3.  Newfoundland Growlers 36-14-4-0 76 Points
  4.  Idaho Steelheads  33-19-2-2 70 Points
  5.  Toledo Walleye 31-14-5-3 70 Points

Playoff Scenarios:

The following are some of the ways the Cyclones and Everblades can clinch the playoffs this week.

Cincinnati Cyclones

  • Win All 3 Games this weekend OR
  • Win 2 Games and Indy Fuel lose two games plus a Nailers OT loss
  • Any other combination of 8 points

Florida Everblades

  • 3 wins AND 1 South Carolina loss
  • Any other combination of 8 points

The trade deadline is coming up March 7th at 3pm eastern time. Make sure you check out our ECHL trade tracker for the latest transactions. Also keep an eye out on Sunday March 3rd, as I will make new predictions for the end of season awards going into the final quarter of the season and make sure you come back next week for another updated playoff picture.
