Kansas City Acquire Andrew Benintendi In Three Team Trade

Heading into the 2021 MLB Season, questions were surrounding Andrew Benintendi about his future with the Boston Red Sox and if he would be on the team on opening day. On Wednesday, Boston traded Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals in a three-way trade involving the New York Mets. Boston will acquire Franchy Cordero, Josh Winchowski, and 3 players to be named later and New York will acquire Khalil Lee from Kansas City.

In 14 games during the short 2020 season, Benintendi hit 1 RBI with a batting average of .103. Benintendi missed most of the 2020 season with a right rib cage strain. After a down season in 2019, 2020 was just as bad for Andrew Benintendi.

Throughout his entire MLB Career, Benintendi has spent it with Boston. During the 2017 and 2018 seasons, Benintendi hit over 80 RBI, 15 Homeruns, and over a .260 average. During that time, Benintendi was a promising young player for Boston. Unfortnally for Boston, during the 2019 and 2020 season, the production from Benintendi went downhill with him having less than 15 home runs and under 70 RBI.

With Benintendi being in a slump during the 2019 and 2020 season, Boston decided to get some value for him despite his production the past two seasons.

For Kansas City, the team will be getting an improvement from Francy Cordero and someone who can be a promising player if Benintendi can bounce back in 2021. With Benintendi heading to Kansas City, he will be joining an outfield that includes Whit Merrifield, Edward Olivares, and Michael J Taylor. Kansas City won’t have about Benintendi contract until after the 2022 season.

For New York, the team is getting an outfield prospect to join their prospect pool in Khalil Lee. Lee has a decent season in 2019 in Double-A with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals of the Texas League.

  1. I’m absolutely disappointed that the Boston Red Sox traded a fan favourite Andrew Benintendi.
I don’t know any of the players going to the Red Sox and I understand all sports is a business, just because a player hasn’t been able to meet the top of his potential from years previous to 2019-2020, I would have given Benintendi at least to prove himself in 2021 before being traded.
As a longtime fan of the Boston Red Sox this trade better be for the good.
Regardless, I will forever be a Boston Red Sox fan!!!
Thank you for taking the time to listen to my rant!!!
