Jordan Henderson to Miss Rest of Season

Jordan Henderson to Miss Rest of Season

Liverpool gaffer Jürgen Klopp confirmed on Friday that team captain Jordan Henderson will be forced to sit out the rest of the 2019-20 season in order to heal up from a knee injury he sustained on Wednesday. Luckily for everyone at Anfield, the midfielder will not need surgery, meaning he should be back before the start of next season.

The 30-year-old absolutely petrified the Liverpool faithful towards the end of the Reds’ commanding 3-1 victory over Brighton. Fans were concerned that Henderson, who had been one of the club’s strongest players all season, was going to have to go under the knife and be out for several months. But those fears were eliminated on Friday after scans completed after the match showed no extended damage.

Klopp himself seemed relieved when relaying the news to reporters. “(It) is the best possible of all bad news.” He added, “We were all concerned when we saw him going down and he left the pitch and when we got the news it was a big relief for all of us. It is not cool but it is the best news we could get. Hendo is a quick healer and he will be back soon.”

Henderson himself took to Twitter after the announcement to share a few thoughts of his own. “Of course it’s not the way I’d have preferred to have finished the season on a personal level but it’s been an incredible campaign for us so far as a team and as a club and I’ll be doing everything I can to support the boys for the final games from the sidelines.”

At least for the foreseeable future, look for Klopp to have some fun with his starting 11. With the league already clinched, the Reds are only looking to make history and pass Manchester City for most points in a single season. If they win all four of their final matchups, they’ll finish with an astounding 104, four points higher than Man City’s 100 point run in 2017-18.

With Hendo out for the count, Klopp could juggle around guys like club vice-captain James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and maybe even youngster Curtis Jones. The Reds have a wealth of hungry midfielders who could easily slot in with guys like Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho.

Liverpool will take on Burnley tomorrow, then take on Arsenal on Wednesday at the Emirates, Chelsea on Wednesday, July 22nd at Anfield, and then wrap the season up at Newcastle on Sunday, July 26th. On that Wednesday night against Chelsea, Klopp did announce that Hendo will make a cameo. Because with his positive prognosis, Klopp has allowed the fiery captain to do what Liverpool fans around the world have waited 30 years for; he will lift up the Premier League trophy.
