The New England Patriots wasted no time in making a big splash when the NFL’s legal tampering period began on Monday morning. It’s been reported that Jonnu Smith joins Patriots.
The Patriots signed ex-Titans free agent tight end Jonnu Smith to a four-year, $50M contract. The deal also includes $31.25 million in guaranteed money.
The signing dramatically improves the Patriots at the tight end position, who have arguably struggled at the position since Rob Gronkowski left the team in 2019. Smith joins New England as a dynamic tight end who has speed, can catch, and has the ability to make big plays.
Smith is a 2017 third-round draft pick and has played in 66 games in his career, split between regular season and playoffs. Over his career he has caught 125 passes for 1,389 yards and 17 touchdowns, and even though those numbers seem pretty average, Smith entered free agency as one of the top tight ends on the market due to his dependability and versatility alone.
With the Patriots entering free agency among the league leaders in cap space, look for the team to be making more big moves as the week progresses. Jonnu Smith joins Patriots as the first of many potential pickups for the 2021 Free Agency.
