On this day in 1995, Jaromir Jagr became the first born and trained european player to win the Art Ross trophy. This trophy is awarded annually to the player with the most points throughout the NHL at the end of the regular season.
The 1995 regular season had ended later than usual due to a lockout that lasted until January. He finished the year with 32 goals and 38 assists for 70 points in 48 games. He achieved this at only 22 years old. After M.Lemieux won the award the following two seasons, he went on to earn it four years in a row.
Jan Jech had this to say about his style of play : “A true hockey legend. Very talented right winger with excellent offensive skills. He has a great stickhandling and often leads the puck single-handedly. Jagr is an excellent finisher, but also creates scoring opportunities for his teammates. He is very strong on the puck and has a good balance. One of hockey’s finest on powerplay.”
Jagr has had a legendary career. He’s accumulated 1921 points over 1733 games in the NHL. He would have been the second player ever to surpass the 2000 points mark had he not played three season in the KHL from 2008-11. He received a ridiculous amount of individual awards, on top of the 5 Art Ross trophies, winning three Ted Lindsay Awards, one Hart Award and is a member of the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame. He also wonn his fair share of championships : two Stanley Cups, two World Cups and an Olympic gold medal. He always dedicated his life to hockey and continues to play with the franchise he owns in the Czech league at 48 years old.
The Czechoslovakian superstar was a role model for all young European hockey players who aspired to have success in the NHL. Since Jagr’s four scoring titles in a row, seven other Europeans have won the award. He’s considered one of the best to ever play the game and when all is said and done he will have a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
