Jake Bailey: The Unsung Hero

Jake Bailey: The Unsung Hero

The New England Patriots improve to 9-1 this past Sunday with a 17-10 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The game was not pretty by any means, however Punter Jake Bailey deserves a pat on the back.

Let’s take a deep look into Bailey’s numbers and how he played a huge role in Sunday’s victory. Bailey averaged 47.6 yards a punt and 6 punts inside the 20 yard line. There was no offensive consistency in the game, which made it a game of field position. With the Patriots continued success on defense, Bailey was able to pin the Eagles in their own territory numerous times.

Bailey was drafted in the 5th round by the Patriots in the 2019 draft. With the dismissal of 3-time Super Bowl Champion Ryan Allen, Bailey has big shoes to fill.

There was a total of 27 points in the game. Needless to say, it was not what many expected. Julian Edelman threw a perfect touchdown pass to Phillip Dorsett in the end zone. Nick Folk was able to knock down 9 points in field goals.

Punters do not receive enough credit. We always hear about quarterbacks and running backs, but when was the last time a punter was given credit? When we think of great punters, names such as Ray Guy and Shane Lechler top the list. It is only the beginning of Bailey’s career, but there is a bright future ahead for the rookie.

The Patriots will take on Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys next Sunday. With all the criticism behind the Patriots offensive struggles, Isaiah Wynn could be activated from injured reserve next week. Wynn is an established tackle who can protect Brady’s blindside. Rookie N’Keal Harry made his season debut this past week in hopes to learn the system and receive more targets moving forward.  At the end of the day, the Patriots are still at the top of the NFL even with offensive struggles.
