Two pieces of interesting news broke earlier this afternoon. The first piece was that Doug Marrone is out as the Jacksonville Jaguars head coach come season’s end. This came as no surprise to anyone, most people agree that Marrone should have been out last year. The second piece of news was far more interesting and it was about the man like to replace Marrone: legendary college coach Urban Meyer.
With this news coming out, the question has to be asked, “Could Urban Meyer go with Justin Fields over Trevor Lawrence?”
With Meyer coaching at OSU from 2012-2018, his fingerprints can still be seen on the OSU offense and could make for a very easy transition for Fields into the NFL.
If you keep up with recruiting like I do, you’ve been hearing about Trevor Lawrence being the number one pick in the 2021 draft since 2015 when he burst onto the scene at Cartersville High School. Many have called him a generational talent, comparing him to Andrew Luck and John Elway. Let’s be honest though, he hasn’t looked it this year. We got to see Lawrence and Fields head to head last night in the Sugar Bowl, and it really wasn’t close. Justin Fields threw six TDs to Lawrence’s two en route to a 49-28 victory, sending OSU to the national championship.
Now in the scouting world, you hear the word “potential” thrown around a lot. While I do think Lawrence has more upside than Fields, I don’t think its enough for Urban Meyer to easily pass on Fields, a QB familiar with the offense he uses, in favor of Trevor Lawrence. We still have to go through the Combine and pro days, so we’ll see how this unfolds. Just something to think about when you’re filling out your next mock draft.
