Is This The Year?

Three seasons, three Metropolitan Division Titles, only one trip to the Eastern Conference Finals; this year.

That’s right the Washington Capitals have now won three Metropolitan Division Titles in a row, however this is the only year that they did not get eliminated by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Second Round, and have now taken a 2-0 series lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Alexander Ovechkin has been the face of the Capitals’ franchise since 2005, however even with three President’s Trophy winning teams, Washington has not been able to bring home a Stanley Cup.

Many people argue that Ovechkin needs to win a Stanley Cup in order to solidify his legacy, although I feel his stats speak for themselves.

So far this post season, Ovechkin has recorded 10 goals and 9 assists, and with the help of Evgeny Kuznetsov recording 8 goals and 11 assists, the Capitals appear to be ready to make the final push to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.

With an impressive 4-2 Game 1 win in Tampa Bay, many people expected Washington to lose Game 2.

This did not happen. After trailing 2-1 at the end of the First Period, the Capitals were able to score five goals in a row to record an incredible 6-2 win taking a 2-0 series lead.

This series is now heading back to Washington for Games 3 and 4.

If Tampa Bay can not turn things around quickly, Washington is showing they have the fire power to put this series to rest. Quickly.

With the Capitals riding this huge wave of momentum, it has hard not to think too far ahead and what this team could do if they continue this level of performance.
