IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen Preview

The IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship will come to a familiar track this weekend to host its annual six hour endurance classic: the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International.  42 cars racing among three classes will tackle the 3.4 mile 11 turn road course in upstate New York, starting Friday with practice.  The weekend culminates on Sunday with a six hour endurance race, where the cars and stars of the series will attempt to battle each other and the heat, as the temperatures for the weekend are set to be far above average.

This round of the championship marks the third round of the 2018 Tequila Patron Endurance Cup, which culminates at the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in October.  The entry list boasts a 16-car field in the prototype class, while 8 cars are entered in the GTLM class and an 18-car field in the GT Daytona class.  Series regulars in the prototype class Action Express Racing, Penske Racing, Wayne Taylor Racing and Mazda Team Joest are joined by the United Autosports Ligier JS P217 Gibson driven by Bruno Senna, Paul Di Resta and Phil Hansson.

The GTLM class remains mostly unchanged, with entries from Ford Chip Ganassi Racing, Corvette Racing, Porsche GT Team and BMW Team RLL represented.  BMW Team RLL are the only team utilizing a third driver for each of their cars, with Bill Auberlen and Tom Blomqvist joining the lineup for this round.

GT Daytona sees many additional entries for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen weekend.  Monaplast by Land rejoins the series with drivers Sheldon van der Linde and Christopher Mies driving an Audi R8 LMS GT3.  CJ Wilson Racing and HART adds two additional Acura NSX GT3 entries to the grid with Marc Miller and Till Bechtolsheimer driving for CJ Wilson and Chad Gilsinger, Ryan Eversley and Tom Dyer driving for HART.  P1 Motorsports, who are regular competitors in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series, also have returned with their Mercedes-AMG GT3 driven by JC Perez, Loris Spinelli and Adam Christodoulou.

The WeatherTech Sports Car Championship is joined this weekend by three other racing series, all competing under the IMSA banner.  The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, Lamborghini Super Trofeo series and the Porsche GT3 Cup Series will all compete over the four day weekend, with both the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series and Porsche GT3 Cup Series competing in two sprint races on Friday and Saturday.

One of the things that has made the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen weekend unique over the past few seasons has been the patriotic liveries that some of the cars undergo for this race.  With the event taking place near 4th of July weekend, many teams add the stars and stripes to their cars to celebrate the holiday.  This year is no exception, with numerous cars adding red, white and blue to commemorate this race weekend.
