Houston Rockets Draft Report Card

Houston Rockets Draft Report Card

Draft night consisted of selecting an honorable mention pac 12 defender and trading for an All-Big Ten second team senior.

The Rockets held only one pick in the draft which they used to pick De’Anthony Melton at the 46th spot.

De’Anthony Melton G (USC)

Compared to Dwyane Wade, Milton become the first player since the Marquette alumni to record at least 300 points, 150 rebounds, 100 assists, 60 steals, and 35 blocks in a season. As you can see he is a do it all type of player and although he doesn’t have ideal size, if Trevor Ariza is lost to free agency I can see Milton contributing in the same type of ways as he did. If he wants to find time on the court with The Rockets he will need to improve his 3 point shooting.

Vincent Edwards F (Purdue)

Houston sent cash to Utah and came away with an endurance guy in Edwards. He started in almost every game in his four year tenure at Purdue not starting in only 11 out of 138 total games.

In the Big Ten he put up great numbers in his senior season. He averaged 14.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists.

Notably his three point shooting makes him stand out and likely allows him to fit right into Mike D’Antoni’s system as he averaged 39% on 3.2 attempts at Purdue. Those attempts will definitely shoot up in his first season with the Rockets.

The way that they drafted makes you think they may be preparing for an Ariza departure.

If they would have stuck with just the 46th pick I would have gave the Rockets a C- but by trading for another crack at the second round to find value I will bump them up to a C because I think they did accomplished that.
