With only a few hours to spare on Deadline Day, Hoffenheim have completed a massive move for English wunderkind Ryan Sessegnon. The 20-year-old has signed a one-year loan deal to join the Bundesliga club said to last until the end of the 2020-21 season.
The former Fulham standout has been unable to break into Tottenham’s starting lineup since he joined from Craven Cottage last year on a 25 million pound transfer. He appeared in only six league games last season, a far cry from his 35 with Fulham a year prior. His potential game time was further cut a few weeks ago after fellow left back Sergio Reguilon arrived from Real Madrid, and it appeared that it was only a matter of time until the youngster was sent out on a loan spell.
Hoffenheim’s director of football Alexander Rosen said that after his club accumulated a series of injuries, “we were looking for a high quality addition to our squad and are very happy to have found one in Ryan.” Not only is Hoffenheim acquiring a solid left back, but they’re also getting a player who can play at every major position on the left hand side of the field. Not only that, but they’re adding one who is actually proficient at each role.
During his landmark season at Fulham back in 2017-18, he scored 15 league goals and won the EFL Championship Player of the Year, an award that has also been won by Danny Ings and Teemu Puuki. Additionally, he also became the first player in England’s second tier to be nominated for the PFA’s Young Player of the Year, an award that has been given out to some of the Prem’s best talents like Ian Rush, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, and Harry Kane.
Now he heads to the Bundesliga where he’ll attempt to regain the impressive form he once had and earn himself a spot back in Jose Mourinho’s lineup when he returns to Tottenham.
