Hinchcliffe Wins at Iowa

Hinchcliffe Wins at Iowa

For the first time since Long Beach last year, James Hinchcliffe found his way to victory lane in the Verizon IndyCar Series, taking the victory yesterday at Iowa Speedway.  The win was Hinchcliffe’s sixth career IndyCar Series win and it comes just months after not qualifying for the 2018 Indianapolis 500.

On lap 256 of the 300 scheduled laps Hinchcliffe made his move passing Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden to take the lead. Hinchcliffe would not look back as he lead the remaining laps of the race to secure the victory for himself and his Schmidt-Peterson Motorsports race team.

A yellow flag with six laps remaining involving Ed Carpenter almost allowed other drivers to pit and put on fresh tires to make a run at Hinchcliffe for the win.  However, the race would never be restarted and drivers such as Josef Newgarden and Robert Wickens were not given the chance to charge to the front.

Spencer Pigot secured a career best second-place finish at Iowa driving for Ed Carpenter Racing.  Takuma Sato would finish third, while Josef Newgarden settled for fourth, after dominating the race for most of the day.  Rounding out the top five was Hinchcliffe’s SPM teammate, Robert Wickens.

The Verizon IndyCar Series now heads to the streets of Toronto, Ontario, Canada for the next round of the season.   The race airs at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 15 on NBCSN and can be heard on the Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network.
