Atlanta Hawks’ small forward Chandler Parsons has been severely injured in a car accident involving a drunk driver, according to Yahoo Sports NBA Insider Chris Haynes.
Parsons was in his car on January 15 around 2PM when his vehicle was struck by another, driven by a man who was later arrested for DUI. The vehicle driven by the drunk man was going so fast that it pushed Parson’s vehicle into another, causing a three-car collision. Later in the day, the Hawks placed Parsons under concussion protocol.
In a statement from Parsons’ law firm Morgan & Morgan, Parsons suffered “multiple severe and permanent injuries including a traumatic brain injury, disc herniation and a torn labrum.” Parsons’ injuries are considered severe enough that they have the potential to end his NBA career.
The statement goes on to say that the drunk driver “created utter chaos on the roadway” and admitted to drinking that day and having alcohol in the car with him. The crash was caused by the driver allegedly passing out.
Drafted by the Houston Rockets with the 38th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, Parsons’ career has been hampered by a series of knee injuries.
The Hawks traded for Parsons this summer, and Parsons has appeared in only five games for the Hawks this season. As well as the Rockets, Parsons has also spent time with the Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks organizations.
Parsons is currently in his ninth pro season in the NBA.
