Hansi Flick Signs as New Permanent Coach at Bayern

After serving for a little more than 6 months at Bayern Munich as the club’s interim head coach, Hansi Flick has signed a 3-year contract to become the defending Bundesliga champs’ newest permanent gaffer.

The former Munich and Koln midfielder first returned to the Bavarian giant last year to work as an assistant under former coach Niko Kovac, who was unceremoniously fired in November after only 19 months in charge. His eventual ascent to interim head coach back in early November was his first head coaching gig since he helmed Hoffenheim when they were competing in the third tier of German football.

Under Flick, Munich have roared back into league title contention after sputtering in the opening few months. As of writing, Super Bayern currently sport a 4 point lead ahead over 2nd place Borussia Dortmund and are currently still in contention in both the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League, where they embarrassed Chelsea 3-0 in the first leg of a Round-of-16 fixture at Stamford Bridge.

Perhaps more important than that however, is that Flick has also helped to ease the club’s transition after losing perennial legends Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. Guys like Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, and Alphonso Davies have all stepped up in key positions to help longtime cornerstones like Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski. It’s been a tough transition, but with Flick in charge, the club has barely skipped a beat.

If this season is to continue, it seems clear to me that there will be little doubt that Bayern will win both their eighth league title in a row, but also another DFB-Pokal. With that being said, the key question will be whether or not Flick could help end Bayern’s 7-year Champions League title drought.
