Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks has just been named the 2019-20 NBA Defensive Player of the year. The 7th year forward from Greece beat out Anthony Davis and Rudy Gobert to win the award for the first time in his career.
Already a two-time NBA All-Defensive selection and the reigning MVP, the 25-year old grabbed another piece of hardware to add to his trophy case. The four time all star had one of the greatest, and most efficient seasons in NBA history. His impact on the defensive end of the court led the Bucks to not only the best record in the NBA at 56-17, but also the best team defensive rating in the league. He also had the best individual defensive rating at 97 points per 100 possessions, a full four points better than the next best qualified player.
Considered the favorite to win his second MVP award in as many years, it remains to be seen if Giannis can take home the illustrious double. He would become the 5th player to win both awards in their career, and the third to do it in the same season, joining Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon. Giannis has been a dominant defensive player for several years, and he was finally able to nab the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2019-20.
