Gerald McCoy Signs With Panthers

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has signed a one year deal with the Carolina Panthers. McCoy turned down offers from both the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens to stay in the NFC South where he is more familiar with the teams he will play against and have the chance to play his former team twice a year. The deal is reportedly worth approximately $8.5 million dollars.

With the signing the Panthers have committed a lot of resources to its defensive front. The team already has Kawaan Short, Vernon Butler, and Dontari Poe and are converting to a 3-4 defense. While it’s feasible that they could keep all four tackles being able to possibly play three of them up front with Vernon providing relief, it’s possible that the Panthers could look to move on from one to provide some cap relief for McCoy’s contract.

McCoy is a six-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro who has totaled 54.5 sacks and 140 quarterback hits in his 123-game career. Tampa never made the playoffs during McCoy’s run there, though. McCoy will hope that changes with the Panthers who have made the playoffs four times with a Super Bowl appearance since he was drafted to the Buccaneers.
