GCSN Ranks: Best NASCAR Drivers to Never Win a Championship

We all know the names of the greats when it comes to NASCAR Cup Series Champions. Petty, Earnhardt, Johnson, Gordon, Pearson and Waltrip are on the top of that list of champions for sure. However, there are numerous drivers who had incredibly successful NASCAR careers, but never could claim a Cup Series Championship. We here at the Game Changer Sports Network are about to share with you our top five list of the best NASCAR drivers to win never a Cup Series Championship!

Number 5: Davey Allison

Davey Allison burst onto the Cup Series scene full time in 1988 driving the No. 28 Havoline Ford. After claiming two wins in 1987, and while not running the series full time until the following season, Allison claimed wins at least twice through 1992. 1991 and 1992 were Allison’s best years, as he claimed five wins and claimed third place in the standings as well. In 1993, Allison started the season off well, as he looked to finally claim the championship. However, on July 12th, 1993, Allison would be involved in a helicopter crash that would take his life. Who knows what Allison would have accomplished if had been able to continue racing. It’s fair to say that most NASCAR fans believe that Allison would have won the 1993 championship if not for his untimely passing.

Number 4: Fireball Roberts

Fireball Roberts was one of the pioneers of NASCAR in its early days. He dominated the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, claiming 32 wins over the span of nine years. However, Roberts never competed a full NASCAR season. Because of that, his highest position in the championship standings was 5th in 1961. Who knows what Fireball could have accomplished if he had competed full seasons. We could very well be calling Fireball Roberts one of the best of all time if he had competed a number of full time Cup Series seasons.

Number 3: Carl Edwards

In more recent NASCAR history, Carl Edwards spent many years towards the top of the Cup Series standings. Through his thirteen year Cup Series Career, Edwards finished second in the standings twice, in third place once, fourth place twice and fifth place once. Edwards also claimed 28 wins through his career to add to his impressive stats. However, Edwards would retire from competition after the 2016 season, still in his prime. While many NASCAR fans believe that Edwards career was in its early stages, many also believe if he had continued to compete, that he would have claimed at least one if not more Cup Series titles.

Number 2: Junior Johnson

(Historic Racing News)

Just like Fireball Roberts, Junior Johnson was a pioneer of the early days of the sports. Claiming 50 wins over the course of his fourteen year career, Johnson sits thirteenth all time. In fact, all twelve drivers ahead of him on the all time wins list won at least one Cup Series Championship over their careers. In similar fashion to Fireball Roberts, Johnson never competed a full season of NASCAR competition. Imagine the win counts and championships Johnson could have claimed if he had competed full time.

Number 1: Mark Martin

(NBC Sports)

When you ask many NASCAR fans to choose the top driver in the series to never win a championship, the name Mark Martin comes up more times than not. Over the course of his thirty-one year Cup Series career, Martin claimed 40 victories and finished second in the championship four times. Martin also finished in the top five in the Cup Series standings an amazing thirteen times. However, even though Martin spent three decades in the sport competing for wins and championships, he was never able to finish at the top.
